By Rasih Resat

While many of us were busy dissecting the reasons behind Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu’s sudden and combative press conference, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel quietly shifted the frame.
In a statement that brought a measure of clarity — and perhaps relief — Üstel reaffirmed that the real political confrontation is not between President Tufan Erhürman and the government. The real challenge, he implied, remains where it has always been: with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides.
Apart from a few nuances, the Prime Minister and the President are not standing on opposite ends of the Cyprus issue. In fact, it is fair to say that almost everyone in this country — Erhürman included — could comfortably stand beneath Üstel’s core message.
Which makes the question sharper:
Why now?
Why this tone?
Why this escalation?
As my articles and videos questioning the timing circulated, interpretations flooded in. Some argued that the issue revolved around the Fiber Optic Protocol. Others speculated that Ankara’s strategic infrastructure plans — including radar installations — required smooth political alignment, and that pressure was being built on the Presidency through the Cyprus file.
But some of my sources point elsewhere.
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel is reportedly preparing a significant cabinet reshuffle. With a critical political season ahead, he needs a team that is not merely administratively functional but politically mobilized. And therein lies the complication: Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu occupies one of the most strategic seats in government, yet remains largely detached from internal party politics and campaign machinery.
Replacing him, however, is not a routine administrative decision. According to a trusted source, Üstel has either sought or intends to seek Ankara’s consent regarding such a move. The phrase reportedly used:
“I have this issue in my briefcase as well.”
That is where the puzzle pieces begin to align.
If Ertuğruloğlu became aware that his position might be reconsidered — and that discussions were taking place in Ankara — then the press conference takes on a different meaning. It becomes less a reaction to the President, and more a message to those who appointed him.
A reminder.
Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu has never concealed why he sits in that chair. Nor has he blurred the lines of his mandate. His political identity has always been clear: he represents a particular red line in Ankara–Lefkoşa relations.
The subtext of the press conference seemed unmistakable:
“If you give permission for my removal, you weaken your own safeguard. I am the safety valve in this equation.”
In other words, this was not merely about policy divergence. It was about strategic positioning. A signal that his presence in office serves a purpose larger than day-to-day diplomacy.
Will this debate end? Unlikely. Theories will remain theories.
But the deeper issue is structural:
When the Foreign Minister, the Prime Minister, and the President project different emphases — even if they broadly share the same strategic horizon — the perception of fragmentation becomes unavoidable.
And perception, in diplomacy, is substance.
Even if Greek Cypriots overreact to UN envoy Holguin by branding her “Ankara’s Trojan horse,” even if certain diplomatic maneuvers temporarily unsettle the other side — none of that translates into long-term credibility if internal coherence is absent.
A state that speaks in multiple tones struggles to be heard in a single voice.
And in Cyprus politics, voice is power. As Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu, insinuated while reading the Greek Cypriot National Council’s decisions on the Cyprus issue.
